Lifelong Learning: a self-directed and transformational opportunity
What?
As I embark on the final portion of my formal education journey, I am trying to find ways to transition, as many others have, from my stage of long-term, yet ephemeral formal education to the continuous stage of lifelong learning. While informal learning can take place without even having the intention to learn, lifelong learning can take more conscious effort than I once anticipated. As the world races through and towards technological advancement, it is vital that we not only improve access to resources for those partaking in lifelong learning opportunities, but also show the value in doing so.
So What
In pedagogy, learning is typically either, more-so, teacher-centered or learner-centered; The former approaches learning with the view that teachers have the knowledge and wisdom, and students are to receive the aforementioned knowledge from them, whilst the latter is more working in tandem with the teacher as more of the "facilitator". Learner-centered approaches are what can ideally develop into self-directed learning. Self-directed learning can provide a mutually beneficial relationship with an instructor or be independent. However, unlike with pedagogy, in self-directed learning, adults require a tremendous amount of self-discipline and have to find the motivation within themselves. Adult learners and teachers understanding the benefits of adult learning may be able to assist in finding that motivation. The motivations of self-directed learning include not only the knowledge gained, but it can also encourage more independence in learning, lead to transformative learning, or liberation.
Now What
Not only is it important to educate people on the benefits of lifelong learning, but recognizing that lifelong learning is privileged. To better serve its purpose, it is important to reach underserved populations; This can include bettering technology access and utilizing NGO's and government entities whenever possible. Michigan, for example, is currently in the process of announcing a potential restructuring to allocate more resources to lifelong learning through more self-directed and cooperative learning opportunities. It is a collaborative effort to encourage independence in education.
